These miniature Eddy (or more commonly Diamond) kites are based on the Cocktail Napkin design by the late Charlie Sotich of Chicago.

Another striped Eddy

As I mentioned in my last post, my next few kites are pretty basic. This one is a nice Eddy from the striped cocktail napkin that’s provided me so much fun.

No respite for the immoral

Well Spring has sprung here in Lincoln City. Even more businesses have advertised for help lately, which filled much of my time filling out applications, and most of the rest of my time has been filled preparing for a part time position I accepted at the local fitness center and golf course.

I managed to make a kite everyday, but the only day I’ve had time to post them, I spent lying around with aching muscles. Many of them are pretty simple, but there are some fun little twists so enjoy the next few posts.

This little guy is a basic Sotich Eddy with the striped cocktail napkin I’ve been using, but I wanted to orient the stripes a little differently. I’m pleased with the way it turned out.

As promised

Here’s another from the striped napkin I’m having so much fun with.

Now, back to the work search for me.  Spring is definitely here in Lincoln City, and businesses are advertising for positions all around me (finally).

An early bloom

An early post today. I have to run down to Newport to run another Pinewood Derby, this time for all the Packs in the county.

This cute little flower comes from the same source as the butter flies that I’ve made previously.

It’s pretty small, and little heavy, but it flies alright. The little ones sure are fun.

I love these butterflies

I wanted something quick today, and I do love these butterflies, so here is today’s kite.

However, I find myself wanting to work on something bigger today too.

With any luck, I’ll get enough done on my work search and my other errands to get some sewing done on a Cody sail that I’ve had cut for several months now.

Kite Month

Here’s a nice striped sail for a little Eddy.

It’s not like me to announce a project before it is actually complete (It took a couple knocks, but I learned that lesson), however I’m recognizing National Kite Month by attempting to make one kite a day.

There have been a couple days that I nearly failed, I don’t consider  a kite until it flies properly, but so far so good. I’ll keep posting each day’s kite if I can keep making them.

Feeling like a star

Well the holiday is past, but it’s opening day for Major League Baseball.

I don’t have any sails with baseballs so I used this star instead.

Happy Easter

Well, I squeezed one of the Easter eggs onto an Eddy kite today.

On a completely unrelated note. Yesterday was the anniversary of the death of a member of the Boys Scout Troop in a head on cat accident.

My oldest son had come up through ranks and school classes with the boy one year ahead of him, and had also gone with the boy to the BSA National Jamboree. My son spent the day out of town on other Scout business, but still took a few moments to recognize the passing .

My middle son, who hardly knew the deceased boy, went out of town with a couple of his friends from the Scout Troop and created a couple memories of his own, thanks to another parent.

My youngest son and I went to see a movie at the community movie theater that was playing as a benefit for a scholarship fund set up for the deceased boy’s church youth group. It was nice to cuddle and laugh with my preschooler over a Disney movie, while reflecting to myself about the boy that most everyone in the room was missing.

I was a bit stunned and set back when I realized that I was sitting right in front of the deceased boys mother and two younger brothers. I hope the event was a step toward healing their wounds.

Another step forward, on more than one front

Yesterday, I had a few minutes between my chores and errands and a couple of meetings, so I knocked this kite out. I’ve wanted to play with a different sail, and this element of a cocktail napkin called to me.

One of my meetings was canceled at the last minute, but that meant I could stay longer at the other meeting, so I learned on the spot when the review of my son Zach was approved by his Eagle Board. We still need to hear back from Oregon Trail Council, but I’m looking forward to being able to say that I’m proud of my Eagle Scout. I’m proud of my son anyway, but it’s a nice feather in the cap to look forward to.

Not completely successful Hata kite.

Not completely successful Hata kite.

Since I had a finished kite to share today, I decided to play with the Hata design. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts on the Hata, I’ve framed and tensioned the kites differently than my other kites.

So this one is an attempt to use the same materials as the Eddy and Shield designs, and use a bowline as well. Fortunately all the materials worked the way I had hoped (instead of the way I feared), Unfortunately it’s apparent I need some more practice with the techniques that I applied.

It works, but my OCD won’t let me be done with it. I’ll try again soon and share the results.

Limitations and possibilities

My new templates (I made one for each kite and size) are allowing me to better see the graphic layout of the sails before I cut them out, and while working on yesterday’s kite a graphic element caught my attention.

The 2 inch kite is one of my favorite sizes, but many times severely restricts the graphics that can be utilized. I was tickled that this ribbon fit the kite so well.

Enjoy.
